Home energy management system

Power IQ is a home energy management system to maximize self-consumption of locally generated electrical energy and to minimize dependence in case of grid instability .

It is used for two main reasons:

  • to minimize usage of grid supplied electrical energy or
  • to ensure uninterrupted power supply in unstable systems.

Battery as primary source

  • This mode is mainly used when the network is stable and reliable.
  • Renewable energy will be primarily feed into grid and stored to battery just when »grid feed limit« will be exceeded.
  • Loads will be primarily powered from stored energy and from grid only when battery is empty.
  • Loads management will time shift significant loads to be powered directly from renewable power.

Grid as primary source

  • This mode is mainly used when the network is unstable and unreliable to increase the availability of electrical power supply.
  • Renewable energy will be primarily stored to battery and feed into grid just when battery is full.
  • Loads will be primarily powered from grid and from battery only when there is no grid power.
  • Loads management will time shift significant loads to be powered directly from renewable power when battery is full.

Operation
When switched to automatic mode the managed load enters in the standby status, waiting for the start conditions.
There are two conditions to start the operation cycle of the individual managed load:
  • PV energy produced - Is there enough energy produced by the PV plant?
    When the level of produced electrical power is higher than the demanded power the managed load in standby are switched ON. The order of activation is related to the preset start of the cycle in the configuration table.
  • Finish time - When do you want the task to be finished?
    The system will always take care that the individual task is finished before its finished time value in the configuration table. The latest time to turn the household appliance ON is calculated by the time difference between present time and finish time. When the calculated difference is equal to the cycle time of individual managed load, it is turned ON even if there is not enough energy produced. The needed energy will be taken from the grid or battery.
    ADVICE: Please take care that you do not cause excessive momentary consumption of electrical energy in the system by setting the finish times concurrently.

Pause in the operation cycle
The »pause enabled« managed loads will be paused in when the momentary electrical production is lower than consumption and the appliance is in operation for longer than the minimum run time setting. The paused load will be turned ON when the momentary electrical production is sufficient and the min pause time is reached.

Finish of the operation cycle
The cycle of individual managed load is finished when the working time exceeds the maximum working time. If the managed load is set for cyclic operation, it will be everyday automatically switched to the status - waiting for conditions to start cycle.
